Formerly the Colong Foundation for Wilderness, Wilderness Australia exists to prevent the collapse of nature by building a network of wilderness areas and resilient ecosystems across Australia.

OUR VALUES

Cherished ideals guiding us

We care about wilderness, because wilderness matters.

Guided by the conviction that a healthy environment is best for every living thing in Australia and on the planet, we advocate for the careful and responsible management of Australia's precious wild places.

We see the big picture, plan ahead and consistently deliver concrete results.

At a time when the world is experiencing biodiversity loss, habitat destruction and climate change, we deliver high-impact campaigns that achieve large-scale, long-term benefits for nature in Australia.

We speak up when nature needs a powerful voice.

When the wild landscapes on which nature relies need a powerful advocate, we speak up, persevere in the face of adversity and call attention to the needs of nature in Australia.

We look for sensible ways to make a big impact.

At times when mining, logging, and other forms of environmental ruin threaten our wild places, we respond with innovative, cost-effective ways to shift the balance of power in favour of Australia's natural and cultural heritage.

We have the courage to show the way toward a better future.

To ensure Australia’s wilderness areas and the species that rely on them can thrive, we identify opportunities in challenges, share insights that shape people's perceptions and empower those who want nature in Australia to be safe, healthy and resilient.

OUR EXPERTISE

Achieving results for nature

We learn from research, scientific insights, and share our knowledge with others to achieve the best outcomes for wilderness.

James Pittock, PhD, Prof. of environmental policy at ANU

"Protecting our last wild rivers is crucial for conserving cultural landscapes, wildlife and our sources of water. It is vital to have a strong organisation to be advocating for conservation of rivers and better ways to keep people safe from floods."

Chas Keys, PhD, Former Deputy Director NSW SES

"I help Wilderness Australia because the state governments plan to raise Warragamba Dam will result in severe environmental consequences upstream but offer no substantial benefits for flood mitigation. As raising the dam releases land for housing development on the Hawkesbury-Nepean floodplains, more families will be at risk and emergency evacuation will be harder during extreme weather events."

OUR PRIORITIES

Australia's wild future

We’re protecting our World Heritage by opposing the NSW Government’s plan to raise the Warragamba Dam, as well as running an integrated corporate and political campaign to end the logging of Australia’s native forests.

OUR APPROACH

Our change strategies

We champion a holistic approach to complex land, water and wildlife management problems to protect Australia’s natural and cultural heritage, by working with experts, Traditional Custodians and the wider Australian community.

Confronting the greatest threats

We take action when and where political and commercial pressures threaten the resilience of Australia’s wilderness and other natural landscapes of environmental significance.

Targeted approaches

We achieve great wins for Australia’s Wilderness and precious wildlife by developing targeted, cost-effective campaigns.

Working with networks

Our work brings together committed individuals, organisations, communities and public figures to protect our wilderness and other landscapes of environmental significance.
