Dear Minister,
I welcome the 40 day extension of Stop Work Order issued by the NSW Environment Protection Authority over logging operations in Tallaganda State Forest and thank you for your strong leadership on this outcome.
However, I am urging you to not stop here. The EPA’s stop work order must now lead to permanent protection for greater gliders, their fate is dependent on the decisions made over 40 days. 
The Greater Glider is a nationally listed endangered species. It is dependent on old growth trees containing nesting hollows, and finds its core habitat in tall wet forests containing large old trees, of the kind found extensively throughout Tallaganda State Forest.
Most importantly, just two large areas of this type of forest remained completely unburned after the Black Summer bushfires of 2019-20, and Tallaganda State Forest is one of them. This means the greater glider population in Tallaganda is likely to be both one of the densest in Australia, and a critical post-fire refuge that will be a source for repopulation of the surrounding landscape over coming decades. As we head into our next dangerous fire season, it would be culpable to increase fire risk in this unburned area when we know that logging helps dry out forests and increases fire severity.
Clearly, the Forestry Corporation of NSW have grossly underestimated the amount of nesting trees found in the area, despite finding almost 400 greater gliders within the logging area in their own pre-logging surveys (The Guardian, Home of endangered marsupial hit by state-sanctioned logging in NSW, environmentalists say, 29 August 2023), which they have then proceeded to log. It was also discovered that their surveys for nocturnal Greater Gliders were conducted during the day!(The West Australian, Forestry Corp looked for notcurnal glider at daytime, 6 October 2023).
We cannot trust the Forestry Corporation to manage these logging operations in a way that will protect greater gliders, so there is no alternative but to ensure logging does not continue.
Wilderness Australia is asking for the permanent protection of Greater Gliders through the extension of the National Park boundary in Tallaganda. I am in full support of this important intervention.

Please take a moment and send a message to the NSW Government to protect the Greater Glider from logging that is occurring right now.

There is a shocking and intensive logging operation occurring right now in a large unburnt area of Tallaganda State Forest, which is core Greater Glider habitat.

We have formally asked the EPA to issue an urgent stop work order, as it is crucial that the NSW Government immediately halt logging in Tallaganda to give time for an independent assessment of the logging impacts on this outstanding Greater Glider habitat.
